Tourism Cares for America
Virginia City, Nevada - May 17 - 19, 2007

Nearly 300 travel industry professionals stepped back in time and discovered the history of Virginia City, Nevada at a once in a lifetime Tourism Cares for America Event! They experienced the spirit of the Old West, enjoyed the camaraderie of working side by side with their tourism industry colleagues and felt the satisfaction of “giving back”.

Virginia City, a national historical site, sits atop of the Comstock Lode, the largest and most important silver deposit in North America. Development of this body of silver was the reason that Nevada became a territory and then a state in 1864 as it pumped much needed finances into the federal government. In the late 1800s, Virginia City was “the richest place on earth” where the townspeople feasted on oysters and champagne, wore the latest Parisian fashions, and attended opera houses where the likes of John Barrymore, Harry Houdini and Lillie Langtry enthralled audiences. Today the restoration and upkeep of the relics of this once booming, boisterous, 24-hour a day town are the sole responsibility of fewer than 1,100 citizens. They needed our help.

Tourism Cares for Virginia City brought members of the tourism community together to work on preservation and restoration projects at various historic sites in Virginia City.
