| The Coastal Georgia Historical Society was established in 1965 to share the unique history of Georgia’s barrier islands and the state’s southern coast with visitors and residents alike. This site has received preservation awards from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and the 1999 National Award for Museum Services. These awards acknowledge the society’s role as a model for how museums can influence communities. The new Maritime Center will interpret the island’s natural environment and maritime history. The project has challenge funds from the Kresge Foundation. The Tourism Cares Worldwide Grant funidng assisted in the renovation of the Historic Coast Guard Station for adaptive reuse as a Maritime Center. The Station is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. |
