South Africa, one of the most popular tourism destinations on the African continent, is also viewed as a model for sustainable tourism development for many of its neighboring countries. Fair Trade in Tourism includes the principles of Fair Share, Democracy, Respect for Human Rights, Culture, Environment, Reliability, Transparency, and Sustainability. These principles, when applied, will lead to a sustainable tourism industry. South Africa is the first destination in the world to offer “Fair Trade” certification in relation to the tourism industry. The Tourism Cares Worlwide Grant assisted in the education of and collaboration with local communities, impacting the tourism industry directly.
