Understanding the Peru Summit
Why Peru?
Peru is home to some of the world's most iconic travel experiences, but its tourism story extends far beyond Machupicchu. Across the country, communities, entrepreneurs, conservation organizations, and tourism leaders are creating experiences that celebrate cultural heritage, protect biodiversity, and generate economic opportunity. Peru provides a powerful example of how tourism can support local priorities while offering travelers richer and more authentic experiences.
Why Go Beyond the Iconic Sites?
Iconic destinations inspire travel, but they are only one part of a destination's story. By exploring lesser-known communities and experiences, travelers can gain a deeper understanding of Peru's diverse cultures, landscapes, and traditions while helping distribute the benefits of tourism more broadly. Visitor dispersal can help strengthen local economies, reduce pressure on heavily visited sites, and encourage longer, more immersive journeys.
How Are Communities and Experiences Selected?
The organizations and experiences featured throughout the Summit were identified in partnership with PROMPERÚ, Turismo Cuida, and COLTUR. Each reflects a commitment to community benefit, cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, or inclusive economic opportunity. Rather than showcasing tourism created for visitors, the Summit highlights initiatives that are rooted in local priorities and demonstrate how tourism can support community goals.
Why Does This Matter?
Travelers today are looking for more than a checklist of attractions. They want meaningful connections with the places they visit and confidence that their travel choices are making a positive contribution.
The Peru Summit demonstrates what that can look like in practice. By bringing together the travel industry with local communities and changemakers, the Summit explores how tourism can create memorable experiences for visitors while supporting the people, cultures, and landscapes that make Peru such a remarkable destination.
We hope journalists leave with a broader understanding that meaningful travel is not about asking travelers to do more. It is about creating more opportunities to experience destinations in ways that are authentic, respectful, and beneficial for everyone involved.

The Meaningful Travel Map
of Peru
The Tourism Cares Meaningful Travel Map was developed to make it easier to find tourism experiences that give back to the people and places travelers visit. While the Peru Summit offers an immersive introduction to many of these organizations, the Map allows attendees to continue building meaningful itineraries long after they return home. It also gives travelers and travel professionals everywhere the opportunity to explore Peru beyond its iconic sites and discover experiences that support local communities across the country.
