Meaningful Experiences & Speakers at the Meaningful Travel Roadshow in Miami

Brandi Reddick is a distinguished arts administrator and curator with over two decades of experience in public art and cultural programming. Currently serving as the Executive Director of The ReefLine, a pioneering seven-mile underwater sculpture park and artificial reef off the coast of Miami Beach. 

Prior to her tenure at The ReefLine, Reddick significantly influenced Miami's cultural landscape through her leadership roles in public art administration. As the Cultural Affairs Manager for the City of Miami Beach, she managed citywide cultural initiatives and was instrumental in establishing the Art in Public Places program. Her efforts led to the doubling of the city's public art collection and the orchestration of a $7.1 million commission for the Miami Beach Convention Center—the largest municipal public art commission in U.S. history. 

Earlier, as the Curator for Art in Public Places at the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Reddick oversaw numerous high-profile public art commissions for venues such as the Miami Marlins Stadium, PortMiami, Zoo Miami, and Miami International Airport. Her work has been characterized by a commitment to enhancing civic spaces through art, fostering community engagement, and promoting cultural accessibility.

Session 1:  Sustainable Solutions for Miami's Environment

  • Maddie Kaufman | Program Director, Debris Free Oceans

    Maddie Kaufman is the Program Director of Debris Free Oceans, a Miami-based nonprofit that empowers local communities to go zero waste so that all can have access to a healthy environment and clean oceans. She currently leads their Zero Waste Miami coalition, coordinating a group of 130+ cross-sector stakeholders working to build Miami’s circular economy, and has overseen their Plastic Free Cities program, training high school students to consult with local businesses to reduce waste.

    Maddie received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Marine Biology from the University of Miami (UM), where she studied coral reef restoration resiliency and has since published two 1st-author and five coauthor peer-reviewed articles on the topic. She now teaches a Tropical Coastal Restoration course at UM, engaging graduate students in lectures and fieldwork covering dune, mangrove, seagrass, sponge, oyster, and coral restoration. Additionally, Maddie is a PADI-certified Divemaster and an American Academy of Underwater Sciences scientific diver (logging over 500 SCUBA dives and leading many citizen science dive excursions), volunteers as FWC-authorized sea turtle monitoring personnel, and shares her expertise locally through serving on on Florida Sea Grant’s Miami-Dade County Extension Advisory Committee, Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Sustainability Task Force, and the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves Advisory Committee.

  • Sophie Ringel | Founder & Executive Director, Clean Miami Beach

    Sophie Ringel is the Founder and Executive Director of Clean Miami Beach, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the fragile ecosystem of Miami Beach and South Florida.

    Her advocacy has influenced policy changes, including smoking bans and balloon restrictions. The NYC Times published Sophie’s Letter to the Editor regarding the statewide balloon release ban.

    Sophie and her non-profit Clean Miami Beach have received numerous awards from the City of Miami Beach and the Chamber of Commerce: the Unsung Hero Award, the Better Beach Award, the Clean Miami Beach Day Proclamation and the Clean Beaches Week Proclamation. The Collins Park Neighborhood Association presented her with the Citizen Impact Award.

  • Dr. Lanette Sobel | Co-founder of Fertile Earth Foundation

    Dr. Lanette Sobel is the co-founder of Fertile Earth Foundation, South Florida’s only environmental non-profit organization focused on compost education.

    Named "Miami Compost Queen" by the Miami Herald, Dr. Sobel is a certified permaculturist and a certified commercial composter. As president of Fertile Earth Worm Farm, she has set the standard for compost farms throughout South Florida and has trailblazed commercial composting in the private sector alongside multiple forward thinking clients, including The Miami Heat, Miami Marlins, Pura Vida, Baptist Health, Chipotle, and many others. Dr. Sobel is also currently involved in establishing large-scale, central-hub composting for municipalities in Dade, Broward, and Monroe Counties.

    In 2018, she earned a master’s degree in forest pathology and a doctorate in plant medicine (University of Florida). 

    In 2021, Dr. Sobel joined the faculty at Earth & Life University in Mexico, teaching the world's first Spanish-language doctoral-level course on circular economies. In 2022, she was appointed to the board of the South Dade Soil & Water Conservation District, a quasi-governmental non-profit.

Session 2:  Accessibility and Inclusive Tourism

  • Harry Horgan | President at Shake-A-Leg Miami

    As a youth growing up in Rhode Island, Harry took a sailing lesson and developed a love for the ocean. Following a car accident at 22, that left him paralyzed, Harry’s life was steered in an unexpected direction. Rising above challenges, he ultimately found what has become one of the nation’s largest accessible water sports facilities, in partnership with The City of Miami. During his rehabilitation, Horgan recalls a vivid memory from a Colorado ski trip. “Flying down the mountain, I forgot I was disabled,” he said. From that one small but extraordinary moment, Harry Horgan made a lifelong commitment to enable other individuals with disabilities to experience that same sense of freedom from their limitations.

  • Heidi Johnson-Wright | ADA Coordinator, Miami-Dade County

    Heidi Johnson is an ADA professional and attorney with 34 years of experience in regulatory compliance and the built environment. She’s also a woman with a disability. In her high school days in suburban Cleveland, Heidi was a poster child for the Arthritis Foundation. After earning her Juris Doctor degree from the Ohio State University College of Law, Heidi began working as an attorney for the State of Ohio. For more than 10 years, her focus was regulatory compliance and she also served as an administrative law judge. 

    From 2001 – 2007, Heidi worked for the City of Miami Beach as its first full-time ADA Coordinator. She has been the Director of the Miami-Dade County ADA Office since 2007. She and her staff focus on ensuring that every County government program, service, activity and facility are accessible to and usable by the County’s residents and visitors with disabilities. As an adjunct faculty member of the University of Miami School of Architecture, she lectures on societal attitudes about people with disabilities and how this, in turn, shapes the way architects design structures.

    In her off time, Heidi enjoys all things related to cats, as well as listening to 1980s synth pop. Be sure to ask her about her regrettable fashion choices from her college years.

Session 3: Preserving Natural and Cultural Heritage

  • Daniel Quintana | Director of Marketing at the UnTours Foundation

    Daniel Quintana is the Director of Marketing at the UnTours Foundation. The UnTours Foundation is the proud owner of the world’s first Certified B Corporation, UnTours. UnTours donates 100% of its profits to the Foundation, which reinvests them into world-changing businesses. In 2023, the UnTours Foundation launched the Reset Tourism Fund to bring its mission-aligned investment model to the tourism industry. To date, the fund has invested $1.2 million into 40+ tourism businesses around the world in partnership with Expedia Group, TUI Care Foundation, Skyscanner, Agoda, MaCher, EXO Foundation, and Tourism Cares. Daniel has been working in the tourism industry for more than a decade, with a strong emphasis on sustainable and community-based tourism across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

    Before joining the UnTours Foundation team, Daniel played a key role at I Like Local, a UN Tourism Organization awarded community-based tourism platform that connects travelers with local entrepreneurs and organizations in Asia and Africa, ensuring they receive a fair share of tourism revenue. In 2021, Daniel’s work in tourism was recognized when he was named a Next Generation Leader by the World Tourism Forum Lucerne.

Experience 1 : From Calle Ocho to Allapattah Community Visits

Calle Ocho Experience: A Journey Through Cuban Culture

This tour begins with a deep dive into Miami’s Little Havana, a vibrant neighborhood that embodies Cuban culture and history. The tour includes key cultural landmarks, including Domino Park and the historic Tower Theater. Experience the Cuban coffee tradition through a cafecito-making class. Taste authentic Cuban ice cream, a delightful treat reflecting Miami’s diverse culinary scene. Engage with local artisans and shop owners who preserve Cuban traditions in the area.

Community + Culture In Action: Allapattah
From the heart of Little Havana, you will continue on to Allapattah, an emerging cultural district that offers a deeper look into Miami’s sustainable tourism efforts. The experience will include visits to community art spaces and opportunities to engage with local business owners who prioritize ethical, community-centered commerce. The tour will also feature a stop at Esquina de Abuela, a cultural and artist hub dedicated to supporting local creatives through community-led tourism.

Additional Details: The tour includes approximately 0.5 miles of walking through Little Havana, with stops at local shops along the way. Restrooms will be available at the first stop and again midway through the Little Havana portion of the tour.

Experience 2: From Historic Virginia Key Beach Park to the Harlem of the South

Historic Virginia Key Beach Park
This experience invites you to explore the landscapes and neighborhoods where civil rights history, Black heritage, and environmental restoration come together. Begin your journey at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, an 82-acre coastal green space that stands as a symbol of resilience, social justice, and community strength. Walk the grounds where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once stood and Muhammad Ali celebrated his victories, and learn how this historic site became a refuge for the Black community during segregation. Led by the park’s expert team, the tour includes the Welcome Center, the park’s historic core, and continues by shuttle to the Beachfront Cabin Village with a beautiful beach and ocean view, Timeline Garden, and Hardwood Hammock Trails, highlighting the area’s cultural significance, ecological diversity, and ongoing conservation efforts.

The Harlem of the South: Historic Overtown
The experience continues with a guided walking tour of Historic Overtown, often called the “Harlem of the South.” Here, you will uncover the stories of artists, entrepreneurs, and changemakers who have shaped Miami’s Black history and culture. Key stops include the Dorsey Memorial Library, Dr. William Chapman House, Booker T. Washington High School, Green Haven Project, Dorsey Mansion, Ward Rooming House and some local treats and tastings!  You will also get an indepth look into our host venues, the vibrant Red Rooster Overtown, where local flavors come to life, and the historic Lyric Theatre, a cornerstone of Black arts and culture in Miami. The tour concludes with the closing reception at Red Rooster, where you will continue to experience the spirit and creativity of this remarkable community.

Additional Details: The tour includes approximately one mile of walking, broken into sections, through Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. Along the way, you will explore a nature trail and have the opportunity to visit the beach. The experience continues with transportation back to Overtown, followed by a guided walking tour featuring local food tastings. Restroom access will be available at both Historic Virginia Key Beach Park and The Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater in Overtown.

  • Attendees will select their preferred experience after completing event registration. Tourism Cares will send out an email with additional details and instructions on how to sign up for your chosen experience.

  • Transportation will be provided to and from Overtown. Each experience will be guided by Impact Partner Key2MIA alongside other local community leaders who will share their insights and stories throughout the day.

    Tours will involve walking, with opportunities to rest along the way. Along the journey, you will enjoy tastings of local foods, connect with community members, and discover a unique side of Miami. All experiences will conclude at Red Rooster Overtown for the closing reception.

  • Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater

    Built in 1913, the Lyric Theater became a cultural icon, hosting legends like Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Nat King Cole on its stage.

    After decades of closure, the Black Archives restored and reopened the Lyric in 2000, bringing it back as a hub for music, film, and art. Today, it remains Miami’s oldest operating theater, hosting everything from jazz concerts to spoken word showcases.

    A place of pride for Historic Overtown, the Lyric continues to celebrate Black history and culture.

    Beyond his towering presence and culinary skills, Kevinn Robinson is a committed educator, using his platform to inspire and mentor. He's a proud member of The Salt and Pepper Gang, an internationally recognized male mentoring group. In addition, Kevinn has ventured into the world of podcasting, co-hosting "The Big Fellas Podcast," which has quickly become one of the fastest-growing podcasts in the country.

    Kevinn's culinary prowess extends beyond the airwaves. Renowned chefs across the nation have acknowledged his talents, specifically praising his Mustard and Collard Greens, deemed the best in the Gulf Coast region of the United States. This recognition has solidified Kevinn's status as a seasoned cook, bringing a unique flair to Southern cuisine.

    Coffee on Wheels is a mobile classroom and coffee cart experience powered by Easterseals South Florida’s Culinary Arts High School Program. Designed to empower neurodiverse young adults, this hands-on initiative offers real-world barista training, customer service skills, and entrepreneurial experience.

    A historic and cultural gem just minutes from downtown, Virginia Key Beach Park offers visitors a meaningful connection to Miami’s natural beauty and civil rights legacy. Established during the segregation era as one of the only beaches accessible to Miami’s black community, the park now honors its rich history through community programming, heritage interpretation, and ecosystem restoration.
